Chess Champion Breaks World Record for Longest Chess Marathon to Raise Money for Underprivileged Children
Nigerian Chess Champion Breaks World Record in 60-Hour Marathon for Underprivileged Children
In a remarkable display of endurance and determination, 29-year-old Nigerian chess champion Tunde Onakoya has shattered the world record for the longest chess marathon. Playing unbeaten for over 58 hours in New York City’s Times Square, Onakoya aimed to raise $1 million for underprivileged children’s education across Africa.
Onakoya began his marathon session on Wednesday with the goal of playing for 58 hours, but he pushed himself further and reached an impressive 60 hours at around 12:40 am on Saturday. This feat surpassed the previous chess marathon record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds set in 2018.
Reflecting on his incredible achievement, Onakoya expressed his gratitude for the support he received from Nigerians worldwide. Despite moments of doubt during the marathon, the encouragement from the crowd kept him going.
Playing against American chess champion Shawn Martinez, Onakoya adhered to Guinness World Records guidelines, which required two players to continuously play for the entire duration. With only five minutes of break for every hour of gameplay, Onakoya and Martinez persevered through the grueling challenge.
Known for his work with the Chess in Slums project in Nigeria, Onakoya has been dedicated to providing opportunities for marginalized youth to learn and play chess. The project aims to empower young people who are not in school and often work to support their families.
Within the first 20 hours of the marathon, over $22,000 was raised, showcasing the overwhelming support from Nigerians in the US, global leaders, celebrities, and passersby. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu commended Onakoya for his record-breaking achievement, highlighting his resilience and commitment to creating positive change.
Onakoya’s remarkable feat not only set a new world record but also emphasized the importance of education and empowerment for underprivileged children. His dedication and passion for making a difference serve as an inspiration to youth around the world.
