Nigerian Chess Champion Breaks World Record for Longest Chess Marathon to Raise Money for Underprivileged Children

Tunde Onakoya, a 29-year-old chess champion and child education advocate, has made headlines after breaking the world record for the longest chess marathon. Onakoya played unbeaten for over 58 hours in New York City’s Times Square, all in an effort to raise money for underprivileged children.

The marathon session, which began on Wednesday, was part of Onakoya’s mission to raise $1 million for children’s education across Africa. Despite initially aiming for 58 hours, Onakoya pushed himself to reach 60 hours, surpassing the previous record set in 2018.

Reflecting on his incredible feat, Onakoya expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout the marathon. He credited the presence of Nigerians from around the world who stood by him, singing and dancing to keep his spirits up during the grueling challenge.

Onakoya played against American chess champion Shawn Martinez, adhering to Guinness World Records guidelines that required two players to continuously play for the entire duration. The intense game allowed for only five minutes of break for every hour played, with Onakoya using the brief respites to interact with the enthusiastic crowd.

Known for his Chess in Slums project in Nigeria, Onakoya has been dedicated to providing opportunities for marginalized youth to learn and play chess. The project aims to empower young people who are not in school and often work to support their families.

Within the first 20 hours of the marathon, over $22,000 was raised, showcasing the overwhelming support from Nigerians in the US, global leaders, celebrities, and passersby. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu commended Onakoya for his record-breaking achievement, praising his resilience, self-belief, and dedication to making positive change happen.

Onakoya’s remarkable accomplishment not only set a new world record but also highlighted the importance of supporting underprivileged children and promoting education in Africa. His determination and passion for making a difference serve as an inspiration to youth everywhere.
