Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, hails her as a source of inspiration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Grandmaster Koneru Humpy on Friday and hailed her as a source of inspiration for aspiring players following her victory at the 2024 FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship. Humpy, who defeated Irene Sukandar of Indonesia to clinch the prestigious title in New York, was praised by the Prime Minister for her sharp intellect and unwavering determination.
“Glad to have met Koneru Humpy and her family. She is a sporting icon and a source of inspiration for aspiring players,” said PM Modi. He also commended her for bringing immense pride to India and redefining excellence in the world of chess.
Humpy, who described the meeting with the Prime Minister as a “once-in-a-lifetime privilege,” expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the encouragement and inspiration she received during the interaction. In a post on social media, she thanked PM Modi for the remarkable moment.
Having previously won the event in Georgia in 2019, Humpy is now only the second player after China’s Ju Wenjun to clinch the title more than once. Following her recent victory, she expressed hope that her success would motivate more youngsters in India to take up chess professionally.
This meeting with Grandmaster Koneru Humpy comes shortly after PM Modi also met newly-crowned chess world champion D Gukesh. Describing Gukesh as a confident young player embodying calmness and humility, the Prime Minister praised his determination and dedication, highlighting his inspiring journey to becoming the youngest world champion.
