Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa impresses with draw against Ding Liren in Sinquefield Cup

Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa showcased his exceptional skills by holding reigning world champion Ding Liren to a draw in the sixth round of the Sinquefield Cup, the final leg of the Grand Chess Tour. Meanwhile, world championship challenger D Gukesh also impressed with another enterprising draw against France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

In a surprising turn of events, Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi suffered a shocking loss to Fabiano Caruana of the United States in just 25 moves. The sixth round saw no other surprises as the games between Anish Giri of Holland and Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan, as well as Alireza Firouzja of France versus local star Wesley So, ended in draws.

With just three rounds remaining, Caruana seems determined to challenge Firouzja for the top spot, with both players currently on 3.5 points each. Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Vachier-Lagrave, and Liren share the fourth spot on three points each, while Nepomniachtchi and Abdusattorov follow closely behind.

Anish Giri stands last on two points in the USD 3,50,000 prize money tournament. Gukesh, who has been putting in a strong effort in every game, has yet to have luck on his side. Despite playing white against Vachier-Lagrave and securing an extra pawn, the game ended in a draw after 72 moves.

Praggnanandhaa’s Kings Indian defense as black against Liren did not see any major mistakes from either player, resulting in a draw without much excitement. The competition remains fierce as the tournament progresses, with players vying for the top positions in the standings.
