Chess Prodigy Praggnanandhaa Defeats World Number-One Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess 2024 Tournament

Chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa made headlines on Wednesday, May 29, when he defeated world number-one Magnus Carlsen for the first time in classical chess at the Norway Chess 2024 tournament. The 18-year-old Indian player managed to outwit Carlsen with the White pieces in the 3rd round of the tournament, taking advantage of a risky move by the reigning world champion.

This victory comes after three draws and one loss against Carlsen, propelling Praggnanandhaa to the top of the tournament leaderboard. Speaking about his win, Praggnanandhaa expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, “I kind of feel that I have enough experience at this level and I can beat these players, but I have to play my best for that and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

American chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, who lost to Carlsen in the second round, commented on Carlsen’s playing style against younger opponents, saying, “I have this theory that when Magnus is playing the younger kids specifically he wants to sort of prove a point, he wants to go after them and try to beat them and he takes far more risks than he does against us old folks!”

Praggnanandhaa’s victory over Carlsen has certainly shaken up the chess world, showcasing the young player’s talent and determination on the international stage. Fans and experts alike are eagerly anticipating his future matches as he continues to make a name for himself in the world of chess.
