Pranav Venkatesh Claims Victory in Freestyle Friday Championship

March 13, 2026 — In an electrifying display of strategic prowess, Grandmaster Pranav Venkatesh clinched his first title in the new Freestyle Friday Championship with a stunning score of 9.5 out of 11. This victory marks Pranav’s second win of the year, following his triumph on January 26, and adds to the excitement as four different players have now emerged victorious in the first four tournaments of the series, which serves as qualification for the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship.

Pranav’s impressive performance saw him fend off fierce competition from fellow Grandmasters, including Oleksandr Bortnyk and Parham Maghsoodloo, who finished in second and third place, respectively, both scoring nine points. Bortnyk continues to lead the Championship Standings with a solid margin of 26 points, while Pranav sits in second with 14 points.

The tournament was marked by intense matchups, with Bortnyk and Nodirbek Yakubboev both starting strong, achieving a perfect 5/5 in the early rounds. However, the tides turned as Pranav capitalized on a critical oversight from Bortnyk, winning decisively after just 18 moves in a pivotal match.

As the rounds progressed, Pranav maintained his lead, drawing against Maghsoodloo in a tense encounter that could have shifted the balance of the tournament. With only a draw needed against Sina Movahed in the final round, Pranav held his ground, securing the championship title as Bortnyk and Maghsoodloo battled for second place.

In addition to the thrilling competition among the top players, GM Anna Muzychuk took home the women’s prize, edging past GM Alexandra Kosteniuk in the women’s standings.

The final standings saw Pranav take home a prize of $400, while Maghsoodloo and Bortnyk received $250 and $150, respectively. The Freestyle Friday tournament continues to attract top-tier talent, showcasing the dynamic and unpredictable nature of Freestyle Chess.

As the chess community looks ahead to the next rounds, all eyes will be on Pranav Venkatesh as he aims to build on this momentum in the upcoming tournaments.
