The Dreaded Phone Call: A Chess Coach’s Struggle with Cheating

In the world of competitive chess, integrity is paramount. Yet, as the digital age has transformed the game, it has also introduced a troubling trend: cheating. For one chess coach, the burden of confronting this issue has become a weekly ordeal, leading to uncomfortable conversations with parents about their children’s misconduct.

A Rising Tide of Cheating Incidents

Over the past six weeks, the coach, who wishes to remain anonymous, has found himself making phone calls to parents more frequently than ever. “I kept staring at my task list, desperate to come up with a good reason to skip one of them,” he admits. “Calling a parent whose child has been caught cheating is never pleasant.”

In a recent online tournament, three players were suspected of cheating. After reporting them to Chess.com, two accounts were banned within days. The coach’s first call was to a parent whose son had been implicated. “The parent was understandably in shock,” he recalls. “I had to convey a fact, not an opinion. This was the plain and simple truth.”

The Challenge of Acceptance

While some parents respond with understanding, others resort to denial. “I’ve heard bizarre arguments like, ‘My son is a genius’ or ‘He studies chess for 26 hours a day,'” the coach shares. “Denial is a natural part of the fact-checking process, but it can go too far.”

The coach emphasizes the importance of transparency in these conversations. “It’s crucial for parents to understand that the decision to ban a player is not taken lightly. Chess.com employs a dedicated fair play and cheat-detection team that uses sophisticated methods to identify cheating.”

The Mechanics of Cheating Detection

The coach has learned that even titled players and grandmasters have been caught cheating on Chess.com. “It took me a while to trust the process,” he admits. “But the data and analysis from Chess.com provide a solid foundation for these decisions.”

He likens the intuition required to detect cheating to recognizing tactics in a chess position. “When a student is doing something wrong, you can sense it,” he explains. “Your brain is used to a standard response, and when you get a different one, you notice.”

The Paranoia of Cheating

As the coach became more vigilant, he noticed a troubling trend: paranoia about cheating. “I was once accused of cheating because I had a bad tournament,” he recalls. “The person who accused me clearly thought I was incapable of such a poor performance.”

Finding a balance between vigilance and paranoia is essential. “Chess.com does its due diligence before banning an account, but parents need to ask questions and seek information rather than jumping to conclusions about their child’s innocence.”

Prevention: A Key Strategy

The coach believes that prevention is more effective than detection. “I started conveying to my students that there is a high chance they will be caught if they cheat,” he says. “This message is particularly important for young players who may not understand the consequences of their actions.”

He draws parallels to a study conducted by a postdoc at the University of Virginia, which found that people are more likely to behave ethically when they feel they are being watched. “When players understand the vetting process and feel monitored, they are less likely to cheat,” he asserts.

A Call to Action

As the chess community grapples with the rise of cheating, the coach urges parents, players, and organizers to foster an environment of integrity. “We may be creating a culture that tempts young players to take the immoral path,” he warns. “Education and awareness are key to ensuring that the game we love remains fair and honorable.”

In a world where the stakes are high, the coach’s commitment to honesty and transparency serves as a reminder that integrity must always come first—both on and off the board.
