The city of St. Louis is gearing up for an exciting month of chess championships as the 2024 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship are set to begin on Friday, October 11. The tournaments, which have become a fall tradition in the city, will feature top players vying for the prestigious titles.

In the Open event, defending champion GM Fabiano Caruana will be looking to secure his fourth consecutive title, while IM Carissa Yip will be aiming to defend her crown in the Women’s tournament. The competitions will consist of a 12-player, 11-round Round Robin format, with games starting daily at 1:00 p.m. CDT.

The total prize fund for this year’s championships is $250,000, with $55,000 up for grabs for the winner of the Open event and $35,000 for the Women’s champion. The lineup includes top players such as GM Wesley So, GM Sam Shankland, and a mix of young talents like GM Abhimanyu Mishra and GM Christopher Yoo.

In the Women’s event, IM Carissa Yip will face tough competition from former champions like GM Irina Krush and IM Anna Zatonskih. The field also includes rising stars like IM Alice Lee and WGM Jennifer Yu, who have had success in previous championships.
