Remembering Varugeese Koshy: A Chess Legend
International Master Varugeese Koshy, a legendary figure in the world of chess, has passed away at the age of 66 after battling terminal lung cancer. Known for his innovative strategies and exceptional analytical abilities, Koshy made a significant impact as both a player and a coach in the Indian chess community.
Starting his journey as a self-taught player, Koshy rose to become India’s number two in the National Championship in the early nineties. His coaching career was equally illustrious, with his most notable pupil being P Harikrishna, who went on to become one of India’s premier chess players.
Tributes have poured in for Koshy, with Harikrishna expressing deep sorrow and gratitude for the role Koshy played in shaping his career. Other players, including former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta and Grandmaster N Srinath, also credited Koshy for his invaluable contributions to their development.
