Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Co-Owner of American Gambits in Global Chess League

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has made a surprising move by purchasing a team in the Global Chess League. The league, a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation, will see Ashwin as the co-owner of the American Gambits, a new team set to compete in the upcoming second edition of the GCL.

The announcement was made on Monday, July 8, 2024, with six franchises confirmed for the upcoming season to be held in London from October 3 to 12. Ashwin’s team will replace the Chingari Gulf Titans and will be co-owned by prominent business leaders Prachura PP and Venkat K Narayana.

Expressing his excitement about the new venture, Ashwin stated that the American Gambits will bring a combination of strategic brilliance and unwavering determination to the game. He emphasized his eagerness to witness the team’s journey and contribute to their success in the league.

In a statement released by the Global Chess League, Ashwin said, “We’re thrilled to introduce the American Gambits to the chess world. With a blend of strategic brilliance and unwavering determination, our team aims to redefine the game. As the co-owner, I’m excited to witness their journey and contribute to their success.”

Prachura PP, another co-owner of the team, highlighted the significance of the Global Chess League in the world of chess, emphasizing the opportunity it provides for players worldwide to compete for their teams. The league, played in over 190 countries without any age or gender barriers, offers a unique platform for chess enthusiasts to showcase their skills.

Apart from the American Gambits, other franchises participating in the upcoming season include Alpine SG Pipers, Ganges Grandmasters, Mumba Masters, PBG Alaskan Knights, and the reigning champions Triveni Continental Kings. With Ashwin’s entry into the world of chess as a team owner, the Global Chess League is set to witness an exciting and competitive season ahead.
