The Chess Revolution in Chennai: Velammal Institutions Leading the Way

Velammal Institutions: The Catalyst Behind Chennai’s Chess Revolution

Chennai, known for its rich cultural heritage and love for chess, has seen a surge in the popularity of the sport in recent years. From Napier Bridge being decked up as a chess board to murals on building walls, the city is embracing its romance with chess like never before. And at the forefront of this chess revolution is Velammal Institutions.

Velammal Institutions has been the nursery where chess prodigies like GMs D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa learned the intricacies of the sport. Their success, with Gukesh becoming the youngest-ever challenger for the world title, is a testament to the institution’s dedication to nurturing young talent.

According to S Velavan, the chess co-coordinator at Velammal, the decision to make chess a part of the curriculum has played a crucial role in the sport’s boom in the city. The ‘7 to 17 programme’ introduced by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2013 has also been instrumental in promoting chess among school children.

Velammal’s dedicated approach has yielded impressive results, with the institution winning the World School Chess championship for five consecutive years. The school has produced several Grand Masters and Women Grand Masters since 2005, showcasing its commitment to excellence in chess.

As more children aspire to make a career out of chess, Velammal Institutions is stepping up to meet the growing demand. The institution is bringing in more coaches, modern facilities, and chess literature to cater to a larger pool of players.

Chennai’s reputation as the chess capital of the country is well-deserved, with over 60 recognised chess academies operating in the city. The legacy of institutions like Velammal and the passion for the sport among its residents ensure that Chennai’s chess culture will continue to thrive.

With Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa leading the charge, Chennai’s chess scene is experiencing a new wave of talent. Velammal Institutions remains at the forefront of this chess revolution, shaping the future of the sport in the city.
