Flash Report: Highlights from the 2024 National High School (K-12) Chess Championship

The 2024 National High School (K-12) Chess Championship concluded with an exciting final day of games at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD. A record-breaking 1,860 players from 37 states participated in the event, surpassing the previous year’s attendance by over 100 players.

In the Individual Championship, IM Jason Wang from William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio, emerged victorious for the second consecutive year. Wang’s impressive performance solidified his position as a top contender in the high school chess scene.

The Team Championship title was claimed by The Dalton School from New York, New York. The team, consisting of Gus Huston, Max Mottola, Iris Mou, Ryan Peterson, William Safranek, and Nate Shuman, secured their third consecutive win in the team tournament, showcasing their exceptional teamwork and strategic prowess.

Additionally, several other winners were recognized in various sections below the championship level, including April Phillip Casiple, Brendan Wick, Jake Michael Usallan, Pocono Mountain East, Shu Leong, Stuyvesant High School, Valley High School, Davin Chen, Sparta High School, and Niles North.

US Chess Executive Director Ranae Bartlett highlighted the participation of chess programs from Title I schools at the championship, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to empowering students from underserved communities through chess. The event’s success was a testament to the chess community’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility.
