Meet NM Robert Ramirez: Chess Master, Author, and Coach
Chessable’s Top Author Robert Ramirez: From Chess Master to Coach
NM Robert Ramirez is not just one of Chessable’s top authors, he’s also a great coach. Despite not starting competitive play until the age of 12, Robert achieved the title of chess master in 2013. Now, he shares his knowledge with students like Jamaican national chess champion David Thomas and countless Chessable members.
Ramirez credits his stepfather for introducing him to chess at the age of five. His main coach, Jesus Garcia, taught him a positional approach and precise combinations inspired by Jose Capablanca. Ramirez’s favorite game showcases his favorite setup, the Pirc/King’s Indian Defense, and a beautiful attack.
As a coach, Ramirez emphasizes personalized training plans tailored to each player’s needs. He focuses on tactics under time pressure, precise calculation, and fundamental endgames. He believes in guiding players towards their goals and providing constant reinforcement.
Ramirez advises players to prioritize playing openings they enjoy and understand, rather than popular choices they’re uncomfortable with. He challenges students with puzzles that test their pattern recognition and endgame knowledge.
Teaching exclusively online for the past four years, Ramirez finds it more efficient than in-person lessons. He recommends the book “Lessons with a Grandmaster” by GM Boris Gulko to every chess player.
