Geelong triumphs over Hawthorn in Easter Monday classic at the MCG

Geelong has outlasted Hawthorn in an Easter Monday classic played under a finals-like atmosphere as the clubs wrote another epic chapter to their rivalry.

In a see-sawing affair all game at the MCG, Shaun Mannagh delivered the dagger late in the fourth quarter en route to the Cats’ seven-point win, 12.14 (86) to 11.13 (79).

The game felt like the 2025 AFL finals series came five months early on Easter Monday, with the highly-anticipated Geelong-Hawthorn clash living up to all expectations. The match was a blockbuster in every sense, with consistent ebbs and flows, intense pressure, outstanding individual performances, controversial umpiring calls, and a record crowd in attendance.

Shaun Mannagh’s crucial goal in the final moments of the game handed Geelong another thrilling win, with commentators declaring it an “Easter Monday classic.” The tactical battle between the two sharp coaching minds of Chris Scott and his counterpart was also a highlight of the game.

Bailey Smith turned villain with a bizarre act on the field, but his performance alongside Max Holmes as the ‘Dash Brothers’ was instrumental in Geelong’s victory. Smith’s workrate and acceleration thrilled the crowd, while Holmes’ influence with his disposals and inside 50s was equally impressive.

On the other hand, Hawthorn’s 33-year-old Jack Gunston was a standout player, causing problems for Geelong with his performance inside 50. However, the out-of-form skipper James Sicily struggled with his kicking accuracy, impacting the Hawks’ chances of victory.

The game ended with Geelong securing their third-straight win, while Hawthorn suffered their second consecutive loss. Both teams currently sit inside the top eight at 4-2, setting the stage for a potential rematch in September.

Overall, the Geelong vs. Hawthorn clash on Easter Monday provided fans with a thrilling and memorable contest that showcased the best of AFL football.
