Russian Chess Player Attempts to Poison Rival with Mercury: ‘Mercurygate’ Incident Shocks Chess Community

The world of chess was rocked by a shocking incident recently, as Russian chess player Amina Abakarova was detained for attempting to poison her rival, Osmanova, during a crucial chess game. The incident, now dubbed as ‘Mercurygate’, took place at the Dagestan Chess Championship in Makhachkala, southern Russia.

Security footage from the venue revealed that Abakarova poured mercury near the board where Osmanova was seated to play against her. Following the game, Osmanova complained of severe dizziness and nausea, which can now be linked to the poisoning incident.

The Minister of sport in Dagestan, Sazhida Sazhidova, expressed shock at the incident and stated that Abakarova’s actions were incomprehensible. Abakarova now faces legal proceedings and could potentially be barred from entering any chess championship, in addition to facing up to three years in prison.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the chess community, raising concerns about the safety and security of players during tournaments. The authorities are currently investigating the matter further to ensure justice is served.

This unprecedented incident serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals may go to gain an advantage in competitive sports, and highlights the importance of fair play and sportsmanship in all competitions.
