Saint Louis Chess Club Unveils Ambitious Expansion, Set to Transform Chess Landscape
Saint Louis, MO — The Saint Louis Chess Club is poised to redefine the future of chess with the grand reopening of its newly expanded campus this fall. Spanning an impressive 30,000 square feet, the revamped facility features a chess-inspired restaurant, state-of-the-art classrooms, and a world-class tournament hall, positioning the Club as a premier global chess venue.
The expansion is not merely about size; it embodies a vision to inspire future generations and make chess accessible to all. “Our expansion is the realization of a long-held dream—to create the greatest chess club in the world, right here in Saint Louis,” said Rex Sinquefield, co-founder of the Club. “We’re proud to continue making Saint Louis the global epicenter for chess.”
A Month of Celebrations
The grand reopening will kick off in October with a series of historic chess events. The highlight will be the Clutch Chess: The Legends match featuring two of the game’s titans, Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand, from October 7-11. This exhibition match, which boasts a $144,000 prize fund, will be the first event held in the Club’s enhanced facility, reaffirming Saint Louis’s status as the chess capital of the United States.
“It’s an honor to return and play in a city that has redefined what it means to support and grow the chess community,” remarked Kasparov, emphasizing the city’s unmatched commitment to the game.
Prestigious Championships
Following the legends match, the U.S. and U.S. Women’s Championships will take place from October 12-25, showcasing elite talent and fierce rivalries. The tournaments will feature 12 players each, competing for a total purse exceeding $400,000. The opening ceremonies will also see the induction of notable figures into the U.S. and World Chess Halls of Fame, including National Master Bruce Pandolfini and Grandmaster Irina Krush.
Culmination of Excellence
The month will culminate with the Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown from October 25-30, featuring top-ranked players like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. With a staggering $412,000 in prize money, this event promises to be the highest-rated chess tournament of the year, employing an innovative scoring system designed to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
A Commitment to Education and Community
The Club’s expansion also emphasizes education, with dedicated spaces for its robust scholastic chess program, which has introduced the game to over 100,000 students since 2007. The facility aims to foster the next generation of chess enthusiasts while addressing the gender gap in the sport through targeted initiatives and mentorship programs.
With upgraded technology and a fully equipped broadcast production studio, the Club is set to bring world-class chess directly to millions of fans worldwide via platforms like Twitch and YouTube.
As the Saint Louis Chess Club embarks on this exciting new chapter, it not only enhances its own legacy but also solidifies its role as a global leader in the chess community. The future of chess is bright, and it begins right here in Saint Louis.
