In a thrilling round eight of the 2024 Shymkent FIDE Women’s Grand Prix, IM Nurgyul Salimova’s victory over IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul stood out as the only decisive game of the day. The round also saw GM Aleksandra Goryachkina’s five-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of GM Koneru Humpy. Despite the draw between GM Tan Zhongyi and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva, Goryachkina maintained her one-point lead going into the final round on Friday.

The day’s most dramatic encounter was between IM Stavroula Tsolakidou and IM Divya Deshmukh, where Tsolakidou missed a win in the endgame after being surprised in the opening by Deshmukh.

With the final round set to start two hours earlier on Friday, all eyes will be on the players as they battle it out for the top spots in the tournament. Goryachkina, who could secure tournament victory with a draw, will face tough competition from her rivals.
