In a captivating eighth round of the ongoing Category-17 chess tournament, Fabiano Caruana of Italy solidified his position at the top of the leaderboard with a decisive victory over Hou Yifan. Caruana’s win, achieved in 46 moves from a Sicilian Najdorf opening, brings his total to 6.5 points, placing him 1.5 points ahead of his nearest rival, Indian grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran.

Sasikiran, who had drawn his last two games, bounced back with a solid performance against Czech player Viktor Laznicka, securing a full point in just 30 moves following a Queen’s Indian opening. With this victory, Sasikiran now stands at five points, firmly in second place.

Meanwhile, Indian prodigy Parimarjan Negi showcased his skills with a stunning 27-move win over Wesley So from the Philippines. Despite this victory, Negi remains at 2.5 points, having faced a challenging tournament after an initial draw against So in the third round.

Caruana, reflecting on his performance, stated, “It was a nice win. It is good to be 1.5 points ahead with two rounds to go, but no tournament is over till the last.” His unbeaten streak continues, with five wins and three draws, making him the player to watch as the tournament approaches its conclusion.

Wesley So and Viktor Laznicka are tied at four points each, while Hou Yifan trails with two points. With only two rounds left in the 10-round tournament, the competition remains fierce.

Looking ahead, both Negi and Sasikiran are set to represent India in the Asian Team Chess Championship in China next month, followed by the World Cup in Russia, promising more exciting chess action for fans worldwide.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Caruana to see if he can maintain his lead and secure the championship title. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling chess saga!
