SECL Kicks Off Exciting Coal India Inter-Company Chess Tournament 2025–26
New Delhi – The South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) launched the much-anticipated ‘Coal India Inter-Company Chess Tournament 2025–26’ on Thursday at the Vasant Club in SECL Vasant Vihar Township. The event, which runs from March 12 to March 14, is set to showcase the strategic prowess of players from all eight subsidiary companies of Coal India Limited, alongside competitors from Singareni Collieries Company Limited.
The inauguration was graced by Director (Human Resources) Biranchi Das, who served as the chief guest. In a spirited opening ceremony, Das administered the sportsmanship oath to all participants, emphasizing the importance of strategy, patience, and decision-making in both chess and professional life. “Every move on the 64 squares of the chessboard requires thoughtful consideration,” he remarked, inspiring players to channel these qualities into their daily responsibilities.
The event drew a diverse crowd, including Bajrangi Shahi, a member of the SECL Welfare Board representing labor unions, along with heads of departments, members of various welfare committees, and a large number of officers and employees. Dignitaries took the time to interact with players, extending their best wishes for a competitive and enjoyable tournament.
The program kicked off with a warm welcome song, followed by vibrant cultural performances, including Chhattisgarh’s traditional Karma dance and the graceful Odissi dance, setting a festive tone for the tournament.
G. Shyamala Rao, General Manager (Welfare), delivered the welcome address, while Sheikh Zakir Hussain, Chief Manager (Environment), expertly anchored the event. The vote of thanks was proposed by Vivek Kumar Singh, Senior Manager (Welfare), rounding off a memorable opening day.
As the tournament progresses over the next few days, chess enthusiasts and participants alike are eager to witness the strategic battles unfold on the chessboard, showcasing not just skill but also the spirit of camaraderie among the coal industry’s finest.
