Victims of sexual abuse and sexual assault in New Jersey now have more access to the civil justice system to hold abusers and enabling institutions accountable. Recent updates in sex abuse cases in New Jersey highlight the ongoing fight for justice for survivors. From lawsuits against urgent care centers to allegations of abuse in juvenile detention centers, victims are seeking compensation and closure.

In one case in Middlesex County, a woman has filed a lawsuit against an urgent care center, alleging she was sexually abused by a doctor while being a patient there. The lawsuit points to negligence on the part of the urgent care center and its associated parties for failing to properly supervise the doctor.

In another case, six adults have filed a lawsuit against Middlesex County and Union County, alleging sexual abuse while in juvenile detention centers. The plaintiffs describe abuse dating back to 1991, including inappropriate strip searches and unlawful sexual relationships. These cases shed light on systemic issues and underreporting of abuse in detention facilities.

Renowned chess player Jennifer Shahade has filed a lawsuit against the United States Chess Federation, alleging sexual assault by a Grand Master on two occasions. The lawsuit claims the federation failed to protect Shahade and other potential victims, leading to retaliation and defamation against her.

In Camden, a former student reached a $2 million settlement with the school district for sexual abuse by a teacher. The settlement highlights the importance of accountability and justice for survivors of abuse.
