Young Chess Prodigy A.S. Sharvaanica Sets New Record in Tamil Nadu
Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu – In a remarkable achievement that has captured the attention of the chess world, 11-year-old A.S. Sharvaanica has officially become the youngest Indian girl to reach a live classical rating of 2239, earning her the prestigious title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM). This milestone not only highlights her exceptional talent but also positions her as a rising star in the competitive realm of chess.
Sharvaanica, hailing from the Ariyalur district, has also claimed the top spot among under-18 girls in rapid chess in India, boasting an impressive rating of 2084. Furthermore, she ranks fourth among the country’s active under-23 women, trailing only behind established players like Divya Deshmukh, Savitha Shri B, and Rakshitta Ravi.
To put her achievements into perspective, renowned chess players Harika Dronavalli and Koneru Humpy reached similar ratings at older ages—Dronavalli at approximately 11 years and nine months, and Humpy after turning 12. Sharvaanica’s rapid ascent in the chess hierarchy is a testament to her dedication and skill.
Her latest surge in ratings followed a challenging European campaign, culminating in a strong performance at the Czech Open in Pardubice. Competing against a formidable field of Grandmasters, Sharvaanica scored five points from nine rounds, suffering only one loss. Notably, she triumphed over Polish Candidate Master Tomasz Jaskolka, rated 2238, and Slovenia’s David Murko, rated 2205. Additionally, she held six higher-rated opponents to draws, including FIDE Masters Tal Levitan, Dmytro Perets, and Radek Bujnoch.
Sharvaanica’s impressive performance at the Czech Open came on the heels of her participation in the Montenegro Open and Serbia Open Masters, where she consistently faced older and more experienced competitors. These tournaments played a crucial role in her ratings climb from just above 2000 to her current 2239.
This breakthrough continues a remarkable trajectory for Sharvaanica, who previously won the World Under-10 girls’ classical title in 2025, scoring nine points from 11 rounds. Earlier this year, she showcased her prowess by winning the World Under-12 girls’ rapid title in Serbia, finishing with an unbeaten record of 10.5 points from 11 games and clinching the championship with two rounds to spare.
