Latest News Updates from Yahoo Singapore: Singapore Sentences Japanese Man to Jail and Caning for Rape, Singapore Conditionally Supports Palestine, Flight Diverted after Passengers Served ‘Contaminated’ Food, and More!

In recent news, a Japanese man has been sentenced to jail and caning in Singapore for the "brutal and cruel" rape of a university student in 2019. The man, Ikko Kita, 38, received a sentence of 17 and a half years in jail and 20 strokes of the cane. This case has drawn significant attention online, sparking discussions about the use of caning in modern Singapore.

The incident took place in December 2019 when Kita met the intoxicated 20-year-old victim at Clarke Quay. He then took her to his flat where he raped her, filmed the assault, and sent the footage to a friend. The victim reported the rape to the police later that day, leading to Kita’s arrest and remand.

This case is notable as Kita is the first Japanese national to be caned in Singapore, according to the Japanese embassy. Caning is a mandatory punishment in Singapore for certain offenses, and the country views it as a deterrent to violent crime.
