Singapore to Host World Chess Championship Match between Ding Liren and D Gukesh

Singapore has been chosen as the host for the upcoming World Chess Championship match between Ding Liren and D Gukesh later this year, announced by the International chess federation, Fide. This decision comes after two Indian cities, Delhi and Chennai, submitted competing bids to host the prestigious event. Despite strong bids from both Indian cities, Fide opted for Singapore as the only neutral venue in the mix.

Fide CEO Emil Sutovsky highlighted the importance of neutrality in the selection process, stating that it was a major factor in choosing Singapore as the host. This will mark only the second time that the World Championship will be held in South-East Asia, with the first being in Baguio, Philippines in 1978.

Singapore, known for its multicultural and diverse population, has seen a rise in young chess talents, many of whom are of Indian origin. The country has witnessed a surge in interest in chess following the pandemic, with initiatives like the national training program aimed at nurturing the next generation of chess talent.

The upcoming match between Ding Liren and D Gukesh, with a prize fund of $2.5 million, is scheduled to take place between November 20 and December 15. Gukesh, at 18 years old, is considered a strong contender to become the youngest-ever world champion, aiming to break Garry Kasparov’s record.

With the anticipation building for this high-stakes tournament, all eyes will be on Singapore as the host of this historic event. Stay tuned for updates on the final venue selection in Singapore as the countdown to the World Chess Championship match begins.
