Round 3 Recap: Exciting Results in the 2024 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship

The third round of the 2024 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship provided plenty of excitement with three decisive results in each tournament. In the Open section, GM Hans Niemann joined the five-way tie for first place after ending GM Lenier Dominguez’s unbeaten streak with a scintillating rout. Meanwhile, in the Women’s Championship, IM Carissa Yip continued her dominant performance with a third consecutive win.

In the Open section, GM Fabiano Caruana rebounded with a masterclass victory against GM Ray Robson, while GM Awonder Liang defeated GM Levon Aronian for the second time in two classical games. GM Sam Shankland missed another opportunity to join the leaders, drawing with GM Wesley So. The standout pairing for the next round is Shankland vs. Niemann.

In the Women’s Championship, IM Carissa Yip punished WGM Jennifer Yu for her choice of a rare sideline in the Dragon, securing her third win in a row. WGM Tatev Abrahamyan is half a point behind Yip after defeating WGM Atousa Pourkashiyan. IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova also secured a win, while the other games were relatively quiet affairs.

Today, Yip faces GM Irina Krush, while Abrahamyan takes on FM Megan Lee. The rest of the pairings can be found on Chess.com. As the event concludes, predictions are being made for the winners, with Niemann favored in the Open section and Yip in the Women’s Championship.
