Football Star Erling Haaland Takes a Bold Move into the World of Chess

New Delhi [India], March 19 (ANI) — In an unexpected yet thrilling crossover, football sensation Erling Haaland is stepping off the pitch and into the chess arena. The Norwegian striker has announced his investment in Norway Chess and its innovative new initiative, the Total Chess World Championship Tour, aiming to elevate chess into a more spectator-friendly sport.

Norway Chess has long been a pioneer in the chess community, and with Haaland’s involvement, the organization is poised for a significant transformation. Alongside Norwegian business leader Morten Borge, Haaland has co-founded Chess Mates, a company that will play a crucial role in the ownership of Norway Chess.

“Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football,” Haaland remarked. “You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and plan several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything.”

Borge echoed Haaland’s sentiments, emphasizing the strategic parallels between chess and elite sports. “Chess is ultimately about strategy and long-term thinking,” he said. “Those qualities define both elite sport and sound investments. I’ve even promised to give Erling a bit of chess training!”

With millions of fans worldwide, Haaland’s star power is expected to attract new audiences to the chess world. “I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the globe,” he stated. “The team behind Norway Chess has already done an impressive job growing the event, and joining the project was too exciting to pass up.”

The Total Chess World Championship Tour promises to be a game-changer in the chess landscape. Featuring the world’s top players, the championship will consist of four tournaments each year, hosted in different cities, culminating in the crowning of a combined world champion across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. Approved by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a minimum of 16 years, the inaugural pilot tournament is set for autumn 2026, with a full championship season launching in 2027. Each season will boast a minimum annual prize pool of USD 2.7 million.

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess, welcomed Haaland’s investment, highlighting its potential to elevate the championship’s prestige. “Erling’s involvement speaks volumes about the commercial potential of this tour. He has an enormous global following and is world-class at creating magical sporting moments. I am confident he will bring tremendous value to Total Chess and help generate increased interest in the fascinating world of chess.”

As the chess community eagerly anticipates this new chapter, Haaland’s foray into chess could very well redefine the sport’s landscape, bridging the gap between two worlds that thrive on strategy, skill, and passion.
