Koneru Humpy Weighs Safety Concerns Ahead of Candidates Tournament in Cyprus
NEW DELHI: Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has expressed uncertainty about participating in the upcoming Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, citing safety concerns amid escalating tensions in West Asia. The prestigious event, scheduled to commence on March 28, will determine challengers for the world championship titles currently held by D. Gukesh in the open section and Ju Wenjun in the women’s category.
In a candid social media post, Humpy articulated her apprehensions, stating, “I know that alone, I may not be able to change anything. But regardless of whether I play in the Candidates or not, I felt it was important to express what I genuinely feel.” Her message resonated with many, as she added, “I’m truly grateful to everyone who has shown their support. For those who cannot understand the sensitivity of this situation, I choose to leave it at that.”
Humpy’s hesitation follows a recent drone attack on a British air base in Cyprus, which has heightened fears that the ongoing conflict—triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran—could spill over into the region, impacting safety for all involved.
While Humpy’s potential withdrawal has raised concerns about a wider exodus of players, India’s rising chess stars—Divya Deshmukh, R. Vaishali, and R. Praggnanandhaa—are set to compete as planned, continuing their preparations despite the geopolitical tensions.
FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky has sought to alleviate fears surrounding the tournament, asserting that there is nothing “remotely dangerous” to warrant a change of venue. “Our plans have not changed. We are in the final stages of preparing the Candidates Tournament. Of course, we are monitoring the situation,” he stated, emphasizing that while Cyprus is geographically close to the conflict zone, it remains stable and is not directly involved.
As the chess community awaits Humpy’s final decision, the spotlight remains on the Candidates Tournament, a critical event that could shape the future of chess on the global stage.
