Dramatic Turn of Events at the 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland: Firouzja Flags as Three Players Tie for First Place

Dramatic Turn of Events at the 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland

In a stunning twist of fate, GM Alireza Firouzja lost on time in a pivotal match against GM Aravindh Chithambaram, just as he appeared poised to seize the sole lead at the 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland. This unexpected turn has left the tournament wide open, with Firouzja now sharing the spotlight with Chithambaram and GM Vladimir Fedoseev, who also pulled off a miraculous escape against chess legend Veselin Topalov.

As the rapid rounds concluded, the standings revealed a three-way tie for first place, with only Topalov seemingly out of contention for the title. The excitement continues to build as the tournament heads into the blitz rounds, set to commence on Tuesday, April 29, at 8 a.m. ET / 14:00 CEST / 5:30 p.m. IST.

A Day of High Drama

Aravindh kicked off the day with a spectacular bishop sacrifice against GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda, a move that, while initially questionable, ultimately led to a decisive victory. This match has been dubbed the Game of the Day, and will be analyzed by GM Rafael Leitao in upcoming coverage.

The late drama unfolded as Aravindh found himself in a winning position against Firouzja. However, in a shocking turn, the fastest man in chess flagged in an equal position, allowing Aravindh to capitalize and level the playing field.

“An incredible finish to the Rapid, as Alireza Firouzja flags in an equal position and instead of taking the sole lead, he’s now level with Aravindh and Fedoseev!” exclaimed chess24 on Twitter, capturing the disbelief of fans worldwide.

The Road Ahead

With only a point separating GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and GM Levon Aronian from the leaders, the competition remains fierce. As the players prepare for the blitz rounds, anticipation is palpable among fans and analysts alike.

The 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland is the inaugural event of the 2025 Grand Chess Tour, taking place at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. The tournament features a rapid round-robin format with a time control of 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move, followed by a blitz double round-robin with a 5+2 time control.
