The Global Chess League (GCL) by Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra Expected to Generate $40 Million Business Value Over 5 Years
The Global Chess League (GCL), a groundbreaking initiative by Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, is set to create a business value of over $40 million in the next five years, according to Tech Mahindra managing director and CEO Mohit Joshi.
The GCL, a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is the world’s first franchise-based chess league. With six teams already in place, including Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings, and Upgrad Mumba Masters, the league is gearing up for its second season.
Despite the expulsion of Chingari Gulf Titans, the league is set to expand to eight teams in the upcoming seasons. Joshi is optimistic about the league’s growth, especially after reaching over 100 million users on social media in its debut season.
The league’s second season, scheduled from October 3-12, aims to attract a larger global audience and increase engagement on social media and TV/streaming platforms. With fan-connect initiatives such as school, corporate, and college chess leagues, GCL is looking to further popularize the sport.
Tech Mahindra, the title sponsor of the league, is confident in doubling viewership in key demographics for the upcoming season. The recent successes of young chess prodigies like D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa have also contributed to the growing interest in chess worldwide.
As the league continues to gain momentum, it is poised to revolutionize the world of chess and create a lucrative platform for players, franchises, sponsors, and broadcasters alike.
