IM Renato Terry Sets New Record at 3 0 Thursday Tournament Series

In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, International Master Renato Terry has made chess history by winning the 3 0 Thursday tournament for the third consecutive week, achieving a remarkable nine victories in the event. This unprecedented feat has solidified his status as a formidable competitor in the chess community.

Joining Terry in the spotlight, Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk clinched his third title, while fellow Grandmaster Benjamin Bok celebrated his first tournament victory. The women’s prizes were awarded to WGM Savitha Shri B, NM Liudmyla Ivanytska, and IM Le Thao Nguyen Pham, showcasing a diverse array of talent across the board.

1st Tournament: Bok Wins First Title

In the first tournament, Benjamin Bok made a stunning entrance after missing the initial round. Despite this setback, he nearly swept the competition, with his only draw coming against the renowned IM Levy Rozman, better known as Gothamchess. Bok later tweeted about the match, challenging followers to find the winning move for Black.

After the draw, Bok surged ahead, winning his final five games, including a crucial victory over GM Arjun Erigaisi, avenging a previous defeat in a recent Titled Tuesday event. Heading into the final round, Bok trailed GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov by half a point. However, an opening blunder from Vokhidov allowed Bok to seize the lead, finishing with a total of nine points and reaching a new peak blitz rating of 3172.

2nd Tournament: Bortnyk Wins With An Assist From Bok

The second tournament saw GM Oleksandr Bortnyk dominate with a score of 9.5/11. Although Bok finished with eight points, his final-round victory over Arjun Erigaisi provided Bortnyk with the margin he needed to secure first place. Bortnyk showcased his expertise in complex positions, employing the Philidor Defense effectively against IM Tobias Koelle, demonstrating the importance of experience in high-stakes matches.

3rd Tournament: Terry Takes Ninth Title

Determined to improve upon his previous performance, Terry entered the final tournament with a fierce resolve. He achieved a score of 9/11, securing clear first place and marking his third consecutive Thursday win. Terry kicked off the tournament with three victories, including an impressive second-round game against GM Dmitrij Kollars.

After a setback in the fourth round against Arjun, Terry rebounded strongly, only conceding draws to Bortnyk and GM Fabiano Caruana. He clinched his victory with a decisive final-round win against Bok, further solidifying his dominance in the series.

GM Parham Maghsoodloo finished in second place with 8.5 points, edging out Caruana on tiebreaks.

The 3 0 Thursday series, featuring three weekly Swiss tournaments for verified titled players, continues to captivate audiences with its fast-paced format and competitive spirit. With a combined prize fund of $3,000 each week, the event has become a highlight for chess enthusiasts around the globe.
