Alice Lee Clinches Third Consecutive Title at the Women’s American Cup 2026
Alice Lee Crowned Champion of The Women’s American Cup 2026 for Third Consecutive Year
St. Louis, MO — In a thrilling display of skill and determination, sixteen-year-old International Master Alice Lee has once again claimed the title of champion at The Women’s American Cup 2026, marking her third consecutive victory in this prestigious tournament. In the Grand Final Reset, Lee faced off against fellow IM Carissa Yip, winning the first rapid game and drawing the second to secure her triumph.
Lee’s victory comes with a substantial prize of $40,000, plus an additional $9,000 bonus for winning the Champions Bracket. Both she and Yip are rapidly establishing themselves as the leading figures in U.S. women’s chess, not only by their impressive ratings but also through their tournament successes. Yip, with a published rating of 2486, remains a strong contender in the race for the grandmaster title, which carries a $100,000 award.
A Match of Resilience and Strategy
Reflecting on her previous day’s match, where she struggled to maintain her lead, Lee acknowledged Yip’s skill: “She deserved to win the match yesterday. I think she just played better and was able to keep her nerves.” However, Lee was determined to turn the tide in the Grand Final Reset, stating, “I thought, okay, I can play against her again, and it will be a very interesting match.”
The first game showcased Lee’s prowess in the Caro-Kann Defense. Yip initially gained a slight advantage but missed a critical opportunity to capitalize on it. Lee seized the moment, executing a brilliant move with 30…Rxd4! that ultimately led her to victory.
In the second game, Lee needed only to hold a draw to clinch the match. Despite the pressure, she managed to secure a winning position, transitioning into an opposite-color bishop endgame. Yip extended the game to move 117, showcasing her fighting spirit, but ultimately, the outcome was never in doubt.
A Celebration of Achievement
As the match concluded, both players shared a moment of laughter, highlighting the camaraderie that exists even in high-stakes competition. Lee’s victory solidifies her status as a dominant force in women’s chess, having reached the Grand Final every year since the tournament’s inception in 2022.
In her victory speech, Lee expressed gratitude to many, including the Sinquefields, tournament directors, family, friends, and the Kasparov Chess Foundation, acknowledging their support over the years.
Looking Ahead
The American Cup 2026, held from March 3 to 12 in St. Louis, brought together the nation’s top players in a high-stakes double-elimination format. With a total prize fund of $250,000 for the open tournament and $150,000 for the women’s, the competition was fierce.
As the chess community celebrates Lee’s remarkable achievement, the question looms: Can she defend her title once again next year? For now, Alice Lee stands tall, a beacon of excellence in the world of chess.
Congratulations to Alice Lee, all tournament participants, and the Saint Louis Chess Club for hosting this thrilling event!
