Building Community and Queer Liberation Through Chess: The Story of Queer’s Gambit
Queer’s Gambit: The Queer Chess Club Making Moves in New York
Niki Cross, a passionate chess player, found herself in a dilemma when she moved to New York a few years ago – the local chess clubs were dominated by cis men, leaving little room for queer and women players. Determined to create a safe and inclusive space for the queer community, Cross founded Queer’s Gambit, a queer chess club that has been making waves in New York.
Inspired by the popular Netflix series “Queen’s Gambit,” the club’s name holds a deeper meaning for Cross. She explains, “A gambit is an opening that involves some sort of risk. And, perhaps a queer’s gambit could be, like, flirting or coming out or, existing as yourself, you know, working together, against repressive systems. So, yeah, queer’s gambit is a daring, queer opening.”
Co-captains Azani Creeks and Sapphrodite Alexander joined Cross in leading the club, with a mission to not only provide a space for queer individuals to play chess but also to engage in political action and community building. The club meets regularly at a queer-owned Brooklyn bar, Purgatory, where members socialize, play chess, attend beginner classes, and participate in fundraising events.
What sets Queer’s Gambit apart is its commitment to anti-imperialist and trans-inclusive values. In light of the recent anti-trans legislation introduced by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the club has taken a stand against the discrimination faced by transgender individuals in the chess world. They actively support various causes, raise funds for marginalized communities, and organize events that promote social justice.
The club’s activities go beyond just playing chess; they provide a platform for community support, political engagement, and personal growth. Regular attendees praise Queer’s Gambit for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, where players of all skill levels can come together to enjoy the game and each other’s company.
As Queer’s Gambit continues to grow and make an impact in the queer community, their message of joy, play, and solidarity shines through. Through chess, activism, and camaraderie, the club is creating a space where queer individuals can thrive, connect, and make a difference in the world.
So, if you’re looking for a queer-friendly chess club that values inclusivity, activism, and fun, Queer’s Gambit might just be the perfect place for you to make your next move.
