“Queen City of the Prairie Open Crowns Co-Champions in Fort Worth”
Fort Worth, Texas, known for its various nicknames including “Cowtown” and “Panther City,” also holds the title of “Queen City of the Prairie” in the world of chess. The Alliance Chess Club in the Fort Worth suburb of Alliance hosts the annual “Queen City of the Prairie Open” tournament, now in its seventh year.
This year, the tournament crowned a new champion, Fort Worth resident Brian Tineo, who claimed both the Tarrant County and Fort Worth titles with a score of 3½/5. The overall co-champions were IM Craig Hilby, IM Zurab Javakhadze, and Andras Horvath, all accomplished players with ties to prestigious chess universities.
One of the highlights of the tournament was FM Sharvesh Deviprasath’s impressive win, where he finished with more time on his clock than he started with. Deviprasath’s speed and skill on the board were reminiscent of his chess student, Amari Cooper, a professional football player known for his lightning-fast speed.
Additionally, the Queen City of the Prairie Open participated in the FIDE 100 Guinness World Records setting attempt, contributing to the record-breaking number of chess games played in a single day. The tournament concluded with intense final round matchups, ultimately resulting in co-champions at the top of the standings.
The Queen City of the Prairie Open showcased the talent and dedication of chess players from Fort Worth and beyond, solidifying its reputation as a premier chess event in the region.
