Indian Chess Stars Shine Bright at TOISA 2024: Gukesh and Koneru Humpy Among Nominees

The Indian chess scene is set for an electrifying showdown as the country’s top players gear up for the prestigious Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2024. Among the nominees in the chess category are some of the brightest stars in the game, including D Gukesh and Koneru Humpy.

D Gukesh, the young chess prodigy from Chennai, has had a phenomenal year in 2024. With a peak FIDE rating of 2794, Gukesh made history by winning the Candidates Tournament and the World Chess Championship. He also led the Indian team to victory in the 45th Chess Olympiad, securing both team and individual gold medals. At just 18 years old, Gukesh has already cemented his legacy as the youngest-ever world chess champion.

On the other hand, Koneru Humpy, India’s first-ever women’s World Rapid Chess Champion, has had a stellar year as well. In 2024, she clinched Gold at the World Rapid Championship and Silver at the Women’s Candidates Tournament, showcasing her elite status in the game.
