St. Joseph’s College to Host Prestigious Chess Tournament Featuring World-Class Champions

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is gearing up to host the highly anticipated St. Joseph’s Chess Cup, Tournament of the Champions, on April 12 to 13. The event will bring together eight world-class chess champions from five countries for a two-day battle, celebrating the school’s 150th anniversary and showcasing its dedication to fostering global chess talent and cultural exchange.

The opening ceremony of the tournament was a star-studded affair, with distinguished guests such as Wang Jian, Director-General of the International Department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, and consuls from India, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan in attendance. This high-profile gathering highlights the international prestige of the event.

Principal Kwok Tik-man emphasized that the SJC Cup is more than just a chess tournament; it is a platform for cultural exchange and youth development. He encouraged young players to strive for excellence and expressed gratitude to all supporters for their contributions.

One of the most anticipated events of the tournament is a special exhibition match between the grand champion and the AI system DeepSeek on April 13. This historic showdown aims to showcase how technology can enhance traditional chess strategies.

Hong Kong’s rising star, Form 4 student Chan, shared his preparation strategy for the tournament, stating, “I practice meditation to stay calm…it sharpens my mind. As the host player, I’m determined to perform my best.” Meanwhile, veteran chess player Daniel Lam King-wai, Hong Kong’s three-time chess champion, expressed pride in seeing a new generation of talent emerge from SJC.
