Icon Players Announced for Second Season of Global Chess League in London
The Global Chess League, a groundbreaking collaboration between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has announced the star-studded lineup of icon players for its highly anticipated second season. Set to take place in London from 3rd to 12th October at Friends House, the league promises to deliver thrilling chess action like never before.
Leading the pack of icon players is none other than world No.1 and five-time world champion, Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen, who wowed fans in the first season of the Global Chess League, will once again represent Alpine SG Pipers in the upcoming season. Expressing his excitement, Carlsen stated, “The concept of a team setting introduced by the Global Chess League is very exciting and refreshing. I look forward to playing again with the Alpine SG Pipers.”
Joining Carlsen in the lineup is Hikaru Nakamura, who will be playing for the new team American Gambits. Nakamura, a seasoned chess player, expressed his enthusiasm for the league, saying, “It is an exciting opportunity not only for the top players but also for fans as they get to pick a team with their favorite players to cheer on.”
Adding to the excitement is the debut of Anish Giri, who will be the icon player for PBG Alaskan Knights in the second season. The lineup also includes legends like Viswanathan Anand, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, who will be representing their respective teams in the league.
With a minimum of three marquee showdowns every day between the icon players, the Global Chess League promises intense battles and high-level chess action. The franchise-based league will feature six teams, each comprising six players, including one icon player, two superstar male players, two superstar female players, and one prodigy player.
