Top Indian Chess Grandmasters to Face Off in Chennai Grand Masters Tournament

World No. 4 Indian chess grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi to face off against Vidit Gujarathi in Chennai Grand Masters tournament

The highly anticipated Chennai Grand Masters tournament is set to kick off on Tuesday, with World No. 4 Indian chess grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi facing off against compatriot Vidit Gujarathi in the opening round. Erigaisi, who recently crossed the historic 2800 ELO ranking mark, will be playing in India for the first time in this prestigious event.

The eight-player strong classical event will also see other top players in action, including Aravindh Chithambaram, Iranian Amin Tabatabaei, Vachier-Lagrave Maxime, Maghsoodloo Parham, Levon Aronian, and Alexey Sarana. The tournament, organized by MGD1 with ChessBase India and sponsored by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, will take place at the 1,100-seat Anna Centenary Library.

In a new addition to the tournament, a Challengers event featuring female players will also be held for the first time. Indian women players Harika Dronavalli and Vaishali Rameshbabu will be participating in this category, competing for a prize pool of Rs 20 lakh.

The Challengers event will provide Indian prodigies with the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at a top-level tournament. Last year’s winner, D Gukesh, will not be participating this year as he is preparing for the world championships title against Ding Liren of China.
