Ofowino Toritsemuwa Makes History as the New Nigeria Women’s National Chess Champion

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Ofowino Toritsemuwa has emerged as the new Nigeria Women’s National Chess Champion at the recently concluded 2024 National Chess Championship held at the Orchid Hotel in Lekki.

Having entered her first National tournament back in 2012, Toritsemuwa has been a rising star in the Nigerian chess industry, steadily climbing the ranks among women in chess. Her performance at this year’s championship was nothing short of spectacular, as she dominated the competition with her strategic moves on the chessboard.

Toritsemuwa managed to secure victory in eight consecutive games before facing a tough challenge from Onoja Joy, who ultimately finished in 3rd place. Despite the setback, Toritsemuwa quickly regained her composure and went on to win her next match, clinching the title of the 2024 Nigeria Women’s National Chess Champion. Additionally, she also claimed the title of Speed chess champion by winning the Jonathan Odega National Women’s Blitz Chess Championship.

With an impressive record of 47 wins, 10 draws, and 12 losses in a total of 69 games played this year, Toritsemuwa has solidified her position as a formidable force in the world of chess. As the newly crowned National Women’s Chess Champion, she is set to receive a prize money and an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Chess Championships in Botswana. There, she aims to make history by becoming the first Nigerian lady to win the Continental Grand championship and achieve the prestigious title of Nigerian Woman Grandmaster (WGM).

Following closely behind Toritsemuwa was 11-year-old prodigy Nwankwo Michelle, who finished in 2nd place at the championship. Michelle, who started playing chess at the age of six, has quickly become a standout figure in the Nigerian Chess scene, showcasing exceptional talent and skill throughout the tournament.

In addition to the prize fund she is entitled to, Michelle will also receive support from the Federation to receive full board and lodging when Nigeria hosts other West African countries at the 2025 West Africa Chess Championships. With both Toritsemuwa and Michelle making waves in the world of chess, the future looks bright for Nigerian women in the sport.
