American Players Shine at 2024 FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships: Medalists and Standout Performances
Three USA players have achieved podium finishes at the 2024 FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships in Montesilvano, Italy. The event, which took place from November 15 through 26, saw a strong showing from the American delegation, with roughly a quarter of the players finishing in the top 10 of their respective sections.
A total of 46 American players, the largest delegation at the event, competed across the three Open (U-12, U-10, U-8) and three Girls (U-12, U-10, U-8) sections of the 11-round Swiss System tournament.
Among the standout performances were WCM Abigal Zhu, who won silver in the Girls U-8 section, Stella Xin, who took bronze in the same section, and Aimee Yang, who claimed silver in the Girls U-10 category.
In addition to the podium finishes, several other American players came close to securing medals, with CM Chenxuan Ling, Aiden Li, Sam Luger, and FM Patrick Liu finishing just off the podium in their respective sections.
The Girls U-8 section saw a strong showing from American players, with half of the top 10 finishers coming from the USA. In the Girls U-10 category, Aimee Yang’s impressive performance earned her a clear second-place finish.
The Girls U-12 section also had notable performances from American players, with Sophie Li and others making significant gains in their FIDE ratings.
In the Open U-8 category, Aiden Li had a strong showing but narrowly missed out on a podium finish. In the Open U-10 section, CM Chenxuan Ling’s performance earned him a tie for third place.
