Exciting Draws in Round 3 of Superbet Chess Classic Romania

The third round of the Superbet Chess Classic Romania ended in a series of draws, despite intense action on the boards. Grandmasters Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu missed out on potential wins against GMs Alireza Firouzja and Gukesh Dommaraju, respectively. Round four is set to begin on Saturday, June 29, at 8 a.m. ET / 14:00 CEST / 17:30 p.m. IST.

In a morning blitz tournament among Romanian female players, WGM Mihaela Sandu emerged victorious with a perfect score of 9/9. The main event saw Vachier-Lagrave and Firouzja engage in a strategic battle, with Firouzja ultimately escaping with a draw despite Vachier-Lagrave holding a winning position at one point.

The clash between Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa showcased a thrilling exchange of tactics, with both players coming close to securing a victory. However, the game ended in a draw after a series of blunders and a complex endgame.

Other matchups in the round included Abdusattorov vs. Caruana and Giri vs. Nepomniachtchi, both ending in draws. Local wildcard Bogdan-Daniel Deac impressed with his solid defense against Wesley So, holding on for a draw in a slightly worse ending.

The Superbet Chess Classic Romania is part of the 2024 Grand Chess Tour, featuring a 10-player round-robin format with classical time control. The tournament boasts a $350,000 prize fund and runs from June 26 to July 5. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting chess event!
