Breaking News: GM Vaishali Rameshbabu Breaks 2500 Barrier, GM Gukesh Dommaraju Returns to Sixth Place on FIDE Rating List

Breaking barriers and setting new records, the world of chess saw some exciting developments in the August 2024 FIDE rating list. GM Vaishali Rameshbabu made history by officially breaking the 2500 barrier for the first time, securing the 11th place on the list. Meanwhile, GM Gukesh Dommaraju reclaimed his spot as the sixth highest-rated player in the world after a modest rating gain of three points at the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest.

Gukesh’s rise to sixth place was a result of his impressive performance at the FIDE Candidates tournament earlier in the year. He switched places with GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who lost seven points in the recent tournament. The top 10 also saw significant movements, with GM Wei Yi and GM Alireza Firouzja both gaining seven points to climb up the rankings.

However, not all players had a successful month. GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu dropped to 12th place after losing eight points in tournaments in Bucharest and Biel. On the other hand, GM Liem Le emerged as a winner in Biel for the third consecutive year, gaining 10 points and achieving a new career-best rating of 2741.

One of the most notable gains in the top 100 players was made by GM Jorden van Foreest, who gained an impressive 25 points in two tournaments in Quebec, Canada. The Dutch grandmaster is now on the verge of reclaiming his 2700 rating.

Among the young talents, Turkish GM Ediz Gurel broke the 2600 barrier for the first time with a rating of 2602. IM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, just 13 years old, also made a significant leap in ratings, reaching 2599 after gaining 23 points in the Turkish league.

Overall, the August 2024 FIDE rating list showcased a mix of breakthrough performances, career-best ratings, and impressive gains by players from around the world. The world of chess continues to witness exciting developments and new milestones as players strive for excellence on the global stage.
