Ankara, Turkey – In a captivating display of strategy and skill, Dutch Grandmaster Jorden van Foreest triumphed over Turkish rising star Ediz Gürel in a 12-game chess match held at the Green Park Hotel from February 11 to 17. The event, organized by the Turkish Chess Federation in collaboration with the National Ministry of Youth and Sports, showcased a mix of classical, rapid, and blitz formats, drawing chess enthusiasts from around the globe.

The match comprised six classical games, two rapid Freestyle (Chess960) games, and four blitz games, with only the classical games contributing to FIDE ratings. The classical time control allowed players 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from the start. The Freestyle games featured a rapid pace of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment, while the blitz games were played at a brisk 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment.

A Battle of Wits

The classical segment kicked off with Van Foreest claiming victory in the first game. Gürel quickly responded, winning the second game with white pieces. However, Van Foreest regained the lead in the third game, showcasing his tactical prowess. The fourth game ended in a draw, leaving the score at 2½–1½ in favor of Van Foreest.

The Dutch grandmaster extended his lead in the fifth game, capitalizing on a critical mistake by Gürel, who struggled to maintain balance after castling queenside. Van Foreest closed the classical portion with another win, ending the segment with a commanding score of 4½–1½. With the classical games weighted three times, this translated to a significant 13½ weighted points for Van Foreest against 4½ for Gürel.

Rapid and Blitz Showdown

The final day of competition began with two Freestyle games. Van Foreest continued his dominance, winning the first game and drawing the second, concluding the rapid mini-match at 1½–½ in his favor. This pushed the overall score to 16½–5½, solidifying his lead.

The blitz segment saw a mix of tension and excitement. The first two games ended in draws, but Van Foreest showcased his skill by winning both the third and fourth games, concluding the blitz portion with a score of 3–1. Overall, the match ended with a decisive 9–3 victory for Van Foreest, who amassed 19½ points on the weighted scale, compared to Gürel’s 6½.

A Bright Future for Turkish Chess

This event not only highlighted the talents of both players but also marked a significant moment for Turkish chess, as it now boasts two players in the world’s top five among juniors: Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Ediz Gürel. The total prize fund of €2,500 saw Van Foreest awarded €1,500 for his victory, while Gürel received €1,000 as the runner-up.
