India’s Rising Chess Stars: D Gukesh and Koneru Humpy Shine on World Stage
India has been making waves in the world of chess, with young talents like D Gukesh and Koneru Humpy achieving remarkable victories. Last year, D Gukesh clinched the World Championship title by defeating Ding Liren in Singapore, while Koneru Humpy emerged as the Women’s World Rapid Champion.
The current live chess rankings reflect India’s dominance in the sport, with three Indian Grandmasters in the top-ten. Gukesh holds the third position, trailing behind Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. Additionally, Arjun Erigaisi is ranked fifth, and R Praggnanandhaa is placed eighth.
Following his outstanding performance at the Prague Masters, Aravindh Chithambaram soared to the 14th spot in the world rankings, while chess legend Viswanathan Anand slipped to 15th place.
Anand recently shared his thoughts on India’s young Grandmasters, praising their talent and potential. He highlighted the youth of the top players and emphasized the friendly yet competitive dynamic among them, which motivates each player to strive for excellence.
In a further display of India’s chess prowess, Nihal Sarin climbed two spots to become the 41st ranked player globally. Vidit Gujrathi and Harikrishna Pentala also secured impressive rankings, with Gujrathi at 24th and Pentala at 30th.
