Viswanathan Anand Excited for World Chess Championship Match between Gukesh and Ding Liren

Five-time World chess champion Viswanathan Anand is eagerly anticipating the upcoming world chess championship match between India’s D. Gukesh and China’s Ding Liren. The championship is set to begin on November 25 in Singapore, and Anand, who runs the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy where Gukesh trains, is thrilled about the opportunity that lies ahead for the young Indian grandmaster.

Gukesh made history last year by becoming the youngest-ever Candidate’s winner, earning him the chance to challenge Liren for the title of world champion. Anand, in an interview with CNBCTV-18, expressed his surprise at how quickly this scenario unfolded, stating, “I think it’s fair to say that when we started the academy four years ago, this was not even in our very most optimistic scenarios.”

Anand believes that Gukesh will have a slight advantage over Liren in the championship match, considering the success the Indian grandmaster has experienced this year. However, he also cautions Gukesh to remain cautious and focused, as matches have their own logic and dynamics can change quickly.

The WestBridge Anand Chess Academy, which was established in 2020, aims to nurture promising young talents like Gukesh and provide them with expert training and guidance. Anand highlighted the role of Polish grandmaster Gajewski in helping Gukesh improve his opening repertoire and prepare for the world championship match.

With Gukesh challenging for the world title, the academy has achieved one of its main goals in half the expected time. Anand shared a conversation he had with Gukesh after a disappointing outcome at the chess Olympiad, emphasizing the importance of moving forward and staying focused.

As Gukesh prepares to face off against Liren, Anand’s advice is to acknowledge any apprehensions or nervousness but to focus on the next game and not dwell on past mistakes. Anand, known for his openness to learning and adapting, believes that flexibility and willingness to learn new things are crucial in the ever-evolving world of chess.

The world championship match between Gukesh and Liren promises to be a thrilling battle of wits, and Anand’s guidance and support will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the young Indian grandmaster’s journey to the top of the chess world.
