macOS Sonoma Update Bug Erases Saved Files in iCloud Drive

The latest update for macOS Sonoma has brought with it yet another bug, this time affecting users’ saved files in iCloud Drive. Normally, when files are saved in iCloud Drive, all versions of the file are saved for future reference. However, a new bug in macOS 14.4 is causing all previous saved versions to be erased when a file is removed from the drive, potentially resulting in the loss of all work.

Howard Oakley from The Eclectic Light Company has warned users who have enabled the ‘Optimize Mac Storage’ setting that there is a risk of losing all saved versions of a file if it is deleted or moved from iCloud Drive. Oakley noted that this issue does not occur in previous versions of macOS and advises users to either refrain from updating to macOS 14.4 or disable the ‘Optimize Mac Storage’ setting to prevent any potential data loss.

This bug is just the latest in a series of issues plaguing the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update, with reports of the update breaking USB hubs and printers. While there have not been widespread reports of this specific bug yet, users are advised to proceed with caution if they have already updated to the latest version of Sonoma.

As of now, Apple has not addressed these bugs, which could indicate that they are minor issues that will likely be resolved in a future update. In the meantime, users are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect their data.
