Advancing to the Semifinals

The quarterfinals of the Freestyle Chess Grand Prix saw some intense battles as Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and Vincent Keymer emerged victorious to secure their spots in the semifinals. Carlsen, Caruana, and Keymer started off with wins in their respective matches, giving them a comfortable lead going into the second day of the knockout round.

Hikaru Nakamura had a close call in his match against Javokhir Sindarov, narrowly escaping defeat. Levon Aronian also secured a victory in the battle for ninth place against Vladimir Fedoseev.

In an interesting turn of events, all games on the second day of the quarterfinals opened with the move 1.Nb3, with Carlsen being the only one to deviate from this pattern with the move 1…f6. Carlsen and Caruana both secured clear 2-0 victories in their matches, showcasing their dominance in the competition.

Carlsen displayed his remarkable technique in a rook endgame to secure his victory, while Caruana capitalized on an early pawn advantage to defeat his opponent. Keymer also emerged victorious in his match against Alireza Firouzja, settling for a draw in the second game to secure his spot in the semifinals.

The final quarterfinal between Sindarov and Nakamura ended in a draw, leading to a tiebreak where Sindarov prevailed in the rapid games. Aronian also secured victory in the battle for ninth place, solidifying his position in the competition.
