West Orange High School Chess Team Makes History as New Jersey Champions, Eyes National Tournament

West Orange, NJ — The West Orange High School Chess Team has etched its name in history by clinching the title of the best 12th-grade team in New Jersey. Following their remarkable victory at the New Jersey K-12 state scholastic championship, the team is now gearing up for their first-ever appearance at the national high school championships in Chicago later this month.

“A Beautiful Opportunity”

The Mountaineers showcased their prowess by defeating formidable opponents, including Princeton Prep and Livingston, to secure the senior division championship. Team captain David Milstein expressed pride in their achievement, stating, “It was a serious upset. It really spoke to all of the hard work that my team put in and just the level of dedication that we have and the love of the game that we all have.”

Sophomore Delmari Ferguson echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s a beautiful opportunity. I love going to big tournaments. And I know a lot of us also love going to big tournaments, especially with the seniors getting this win.”

A New Experience Awaits

As the team prepares for the national stage, excitement is palpable. Senior Zander Venutolo shared his enthusiasm, noting, “To go to nationals, it’s exciting because we’ve never gone before. And it’s going to be a new experience for all of us.”

However, the journey to Chicago comes with its challenges. To cover the costs of flights, hotels, tournament fees, and meals, the team has launched a fundraiser. So far, they have raised over $5,000, thanks to the overwhelming support from the West Orange community.

Community Support

Chess club advisor Ara Berberian expressed gratitude for the community’s backing, stating, “This community responded with phenomenal support. So I have to say, first and foremost, thank you to everyone who has made going possible.”

For the players, especially the seniors, this tournament represents more than just competition; it’s a chance to create lasting memories, represent their school, and inspire the next generation of chess enthusiasts.

As the West Orange High School Chess Team sets its sights on Chicago, they carry with them not just the hopes of their community but also the spirit of determination and camaraderie that has brought them this far. The Mountaineers are ready to make their mark on the national stage, proving that hard work and passion can lead to extraordinary achievements.
