West Orange High School Junior Wins 2024 US Amateur Individual Championship

West Orange High School junior Andrew Chan has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of chess. Chan recently took first place at the 2024 US Amateur Individual, 78th Annual US Amateur East Championship over the Memorial Day weekend, showcasing his exceptional skills on the board.

Chan’s impressive performance included five wins and one draw out of six games, leading the field by a point and securing his victory with a last round draw. His standout victories included defeating the eventual senior champion and chess coach, Andy Dong, as well as former Amateur Individual Champion Shaun Smith.

This is not the first time Chan has made waves in the chess world. In April, he tied for 3rd-8th place at the National High School Championship in Baltimore, and in March, he helped the high school Varsity and Junior Varsity teams finish fourth in their sections at the New Jersey State High School championship.

In addition to his chess prowess, Chan is also involved in various activities at West Orange High School, including marching band, indoor percussion, chamber orchestra, math team, and the golf team. His success in chess has also sparked renewed interest in the game, with chess classes being offered during the Summer Enrichment Program for the first time.

For those looking to get involved in chess, the West Orange Public Library will be hosting a non-rated chess tournament for beginners in grades K-8 on June 15, organized by the West Orange Chess Club. With Chan’s inspiring achievements, it’s clear that the world of chess in West Orange is thriving.
