Chess Club in Westfield Faces Closure After 50 Years

In Westfield, a beloved tradition that has spanned over five decades is in danger of coming to an end. The Greater Baystate Chess Association, formerly known as the Westfield Chess Club, is facing financial difficulties that may force them to close their doors.

The club, which has been meeting at St. John’s Church, is struggling to afford the $100 weekly rental fee for their meeting space, as well as provide snacks, drinks, and other amenities for their players. Gaetano Bompastore, the president of the association, expressed his concern about the potential closure, stating that it would be a loss for the local community.

The club has been a gathering place for chess players of all ages, ranging from 5 to 80 years old. Players like Ilyia Begilman, who has been with the group for 25 years, have found a sense of community and camaraderie at the club. Begilman, who learned to play chess in the former Soviet Union, now shares his love and knowledge of the game with young players like David Dubinchik, a 12-year-old chess prodigy.

Dubinchik, who aspires to compete in larger tournaments and earn college scholarships through his chess skills, emphasized the importance of having a place like the club to play and learn each week. Other regular players, like Colin Wheeler, also shared their passion for the game and the sense of belonging they feel at the club.

Despite the challenges they are facing, Bompastore remains hopeful that the club can continue to thrive with the support of the community. He encourages chess players of all levels to join them for some incredible chess experiences and help keep the tradition alive.
