Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi Share Title at 2024 World Blitz Championship in Wall Street

The 2024 World Blitz Championship in Wall Street, New York ended in a surprising and controversial manner as Norway’s Magnus Carlsen and Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi shared the title after a thrilling final that ended in a tie.

Carlsen, the reigning World Chess Champion, started strong in the final by winning the first two games. He only needed a draw in the third game to secure the Championship, but Nepomniachtchi staged a remarkable comeback by winning two games in a row, leveling the score at 2-2 and forcing a tiebreak.

In the sudden-death games that followed, neither player was able to secure a win, with all three games ending in draws. After some discussion and delay, Carlsen suggested sharing the title with his opponent, a decision that was eventually approved by FIDE.

“It feels very good to share gold with Nepo. We reached a point where it had been a long day. We played many games, we had three draws and I felt that I could keep playing. But it was a nice solution to share the win, it was a good way to end it,” Carlsen told the Norwegian media outlet NRK.

For Nepomniachtchi, this result marked the end of a series of runner-up finishes in major tournaments, while for Carlsen, it showcased his willingness to acknowledge an evenly matched opponent.

The decision to share the title instantly sparked controversy within the chess community, with some questioning whether it was the right way to culminate the Championship. However, it also highlighted the closely matched skills of the two players and provided a different conclusion to their rivalry, which had previously seen Carlsen emerge victorious in the 2021 World Championship.

The 2024 World Blitz Championship will be remembered for its unexpected and unconventional ending, leaving fans and experts alike debating the fairness and implications of the shared title between Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi.
