“Preview of the 124th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship in Norfolk, Virginia”

The 124th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship is set to kick off on Saturday, July 27 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. This prestigious event will feature top players from around the country, including the 2024 World Open champion GM Awonder Liang and five other grandmasters.

What sets the U.S. Open apart is its unique format as a “true open” tournament. Players of all skill levels will compete in one giant section, with class players having the opportunity to win prizes in their respective rating classes. The top American player will also earn a spot in the 2024 U.S. Championship.

Last year’s champions, GMs Andrew Tang and Aleksey Sorokin, will be looking to defend their titles in what promises to be an exciting competition. Additionally, this year marks the last year of the traditional nine-day schedule, with options for six-day and four-day schedules available for players with different preferences.

Fans can follow all the action on USChess.live and tune in to the Twitch broadcast for live games. The tournament will also feature a series of invitational championships, including the John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions and the GM Arnold Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions.

With side events such as Bughouse, blitz tournaments, and workshops, the U.S. Open Chess Championship offers something for every chess enthusiast. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness top-level chess and mingle with fellow chess lovers at this year’s event.
